Rick Kahre and J&M Catering have a strong history of community involvement in the Nashville area. J&M Catering’s tradition of sponsoring youth sports teams is just one example of their civic commitment. We have proudly supported the Overton football program for the past fifteen years. Youth baseball has also benefited from our sponsorship. A few of the baseball teams include the Cardinals, White Sox, Devil Rays, and now, this year, the Crieve Hall Yankees. We were contacted by Kurt Kreb, who’s son Fisher plays the pitcher’s position for the Yankees in the coach pitch format. Their season started slowly, but they finished up by winning 8 in a row! Great job boys! We also applaud Kurt and the other coaches, who, throughout the years, have developed and taught young athletes the valuable life lessons that playing team sports has to offer.

The April meeting of The Middle Tennessee Chapter of the American Culinary Foundation was held at the Yazoo Beer Brewing Company April 19, 2010. At this meeting the chefs had a contest to create an entree or dessert item using Yazoo Beer. Chef/Owner Rick Kahre of J & M Catering entered a Lemon Pound Cake recipe using a Yazoo hefeweizen beer. He concentrated the beer and used it in place of water, creating a moist, fragrant cake with a unique texture. His creativeness won Rick first place for his entry and a $200 prize.

It’s Soup Sunday time again. The 17th annual Our Kids Soup Sunday Competition is on February 28, 2010, our 7th consecutive year! Last year’s competition brought in 1,700 guests and $55,000 were raised. All proceeds benefit Our Kids, a nonprofit organization that provides evaluations and crisis counseling for children and families where there are concerns of child sexual abuse. Leftover soups from the competition are donated to Second Harvest. Aside from the 50 soups, stews, and broths from various restuarants, there will be a balloon artist, clowns, a magician, a caricaturist, massage artists, and a silent auction. Bring the whole family!

For the past 4 years Chef Kahre has been participating in the Tennessee Pork Producers Taste of Elegance competition. This year our beloved chef placed 2nd amongst the other 9 entrants. Rick’s entry this year was a Hawaiian Pork Luau with a Pineapple Sake Sauce, Fried Bananas, and a Hawaiian Rice Pilaf.

The chefs at J&M Catering have been busy planting an organic garden. We are doing our part in the “slow food” movement, which is the movement towards using local produce and food products. We are also trying our best to reduce our carbon footprint by reducing the shipment of produce from California, Mexico, and other locales. We have planted many herbs, including basil, rosemary, marjoram, sage, oregano, and parsley. Along with the herbs, we have planted a variety of heirloom tomatoes and hot pepper plants.
